Today marks 75 years since the arrival of the HMT Empire on Britain’s shores on 22 June 1948.
In his book, Windward Family, Alexis Keir explores the lives of people travelling between the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and Great Britain, from the 19th Century, through the Windrush generation and on to the present day.
These journeys, forced and voluntary, give human and individual accounts of exploitation, colonialism, and migration and also illuminate their deeply personal battles to find places they can call home.
To commemorate this anniversary, we’re sharing an exclusive chapter from the book, which you can read here.

‘It took two decades for me to go in search of the parts of myself I had left behind in the Caribbean. What ghosts were waiting for me there?’
